Auto-renewal clause

Last updated June 15, 2026

Definition

An auto-renewal clause is a contract term that renews an agreement automatically for another term unless the customer cancels within a defined notice window. Miss the window and the contract locks in again, often at terms no one has revisited in years.

The notice window is usually short and falls well before the contract actually ends, so the chance to renegotiate passes quietly while the business is focused elsewhere. Once the renewal triggers, the rate is fixed for another full term whether or not it still reflects the market.

Tracking renewal and notice dates is one of the simplest defenses against overpayment, because it turns a passive deadline into a scheduled opportunity to benchmark and renegotiate.
