Vendor-neutral

Last updated June 15, 2026

Definition

Vendor-neutral describes an advisor who has no product, carrier, or service to sell and takes no referral fees from the providers being reviewed. With nothing to push, the advisor has incentives aligned with the client rather than with any vendor.

A broker or reseller is paid when a client buys or switches to a particular product, which gives them a stake in the recommendation. A vendor-neutral advisor is not, so the analysis is free to conclude that the current provider is already fair, or that the fix is a corrected bill rather than a new contract.

When the only outcome an advisor is paid for is savings found, the client and the advisor are working toward the same result. That alignment is what makes a vendor-neutral review trustworthy.
